Day 292: Getting your necks-ercise

The next lame monster is the Japanese Rokurokubi:
[text on note] Rokurokubi: Girls whose necks elongate when they sleep, but who are otherwise human.

Over the years, these mysterious creatures have been downgraded from monsters to circus sideshow curiosities, and then simply to "women with a rare medical condition." Totally not scary.

Day 291: Uwan a surprise?

I love Halloween. My husband, on the other hand, is not a fan of horror or anything creepy (except me). I decided, therefore, to compromise: from now until the end of the month, I will be drawing monster themed notes, but I will only be choosing the lamest and most ridiculous monsters I can find.

First up is the Uwan from Japanese mythology -
[text on note] Uwan: Mischievous Japanese spirit that lives in abandoned buildings and manifests as a shouting noise ("Uwan!!!") to surprise and scare visitors. It exists only as sound, and serves no other purpose than to be a prankster.

A snake woman. I find it interesting that almost every major ancient civilization had their own female half-serpent myth, usually in the form of a deity or royal figure (Echidna and Delphyne, Nagi, Lamia, Nuwa, Wadjet, White Snake, Moura...).
Nuwa was especially badarse; she is credited in Chinese folklore as one of the original Three Sovereign rulers, and her accomplishments include creating humans, single-handedly repairing the Wall of Heaven, and orchestrating the downfall of the Shang Dynasty because she thought King Zhou was a sleazebag.

Day 282: Artistic differences

Last weekend, as part of the Smithsonian's "Free Museum Day," my husband and I went with our good friend up to Storm King Art Center in New Windsor, NY.
I have a background in art history, our friend is a professional figurative artist, and my husband has a casual interest in architectural design. We each brought a unique perspective to our critiques of the sculptures, and while we didn't always agree, we generated some deep and fruitful conversations about composition principles, texture, symbolic meaning, balance, negative space, use of materials, and the changing point of view in a three-dimensional space; however, we never allowed ourselves to get too serious. Sometimes a giant three-legged dog-elephant is just a giant three-legged dog-elephant.

Day 201: To see or not to see

In high school I worked on a stage production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, and loved it. When the movie came up on our instant queue on Netflix, I was excited to sit down and watch it with the hubby. Unfortunately, the movie version is almost unwatchable. The cast is strong, but the combination of poor audio quality and bad soundtrack muffles the dialogue to the point that you miss all the meaty humor and witty repartee that make this play so special. Additionally, the bizarre set and staging choices give it a disconnected, dream-like feel that is distracting and frustrating to follow, and prevents the audience from fully placing the characters and actions within the Hamlet storyline.

Go see a theatre production instead. You'll thank me.

Alas, our geek-filled alphabet has come to its conclusion. I hope you all enjoyed the wild ride of the past 26 days!

This note was inspired by some behind-the-scenes research I did for "U" and "V." I was trying to find a good rhyme or slant rhyme for "ferret," and decided to consult an online rhyming dictionary. It gave me "carrot," "parrot," and "squirrel" as possible rhymes. Seriously. Squirrel. I did not type in "things that kind of look like a ferret if the light is dim and you cross your eyes." I was so taken aback by their suggestion, I decided to write this poem to express my feelings on the matter.
